Gay Freeborn

Gay Freeborn is an oil painter living in western Maine. She studied design and sculpture at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia. Upon Graduation from college she became a veterinary assistant and later ran a decorating and landscape design business.

Returning to painting full time in 2012 she combined all of her interests as subjects for her work including: animals, plants, and fabrics being her focal point.

“Living on a farm brings me closer to nature. I see the fox, deer, and turkeys out there in the pasture with my horses and then they become a story of sorts.”

Gay hopes that those who see her work can create a story themselves, seeing the odd pairing of animals with humans, leading the viewer to ask why.

“I think we all interpret art through our experiences in life. People often ask me what a painting means. The paintings just evolve. The piece begins with an idea but the original builds with layers through the paint, wax, gold leaf, sculpting mediums and glazes, until the painting is balanced. Accentuating light against darks, contrasting colors, textures, and a well-considered design layout. Like cloud formations the works evolve into a finished painting on their own.
